Peaceful Presence

The very first yama, or mode of social intelligence as outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras is ahimsa. This is often translated as non-injury, which is not as much an action as much as it is an avoidance. In our book Living in the Light, Deepak Chopra translates ahimsa as peaceful presence - abiding in the vibration of peace. I love this interpretation because it reminds us that we must embody peace if we want peace to be the way, and asana is a powerful practice to create that inner landscape. How we choose to organize our bodies, how we choose to speak to ourselves, how much real estate we give to our breath and the free flow of prana are all ways that we advocate for peace. As you find moments to rest in your body, notice if your impulse is to make yourself wrong. See if you can create an inclusive space where even those impulses have a safe space to land without being exiled from the home of your body. It’s only when we establish ourselves in peace that we can ever expect to have a peace with each other.
