The chakras are vortices of energy that run along our spine, and can actually be identified as the headquarters of each element that exists in our bodies: earth, water, fire, air, and space. You may have heard the chakras being referenced in a yoga class or in social media but not have a full understanding of what they are. In our upcoming course, Chakras 101 in partnership with Yoga Journal, Alan Finger and I hope to demystify these whirling forces of energy for you.
If you think about the 5 main elements, each has its own unique quality that effects our consciousness in different ways. The same is true for the chakras. Each has its own shape, or yantra, and sound, or mantra, that harmonizes that energetic center when used. What we see and hear has a profound effect on our mind field. Think about it: a zig zag shape is different energetically than a circle. A horn honking has a different vibration than a singing bowl. The same holds true for each shape and seed sound (bija mantra) of each individual chakra. The chakras also relate to different segments in the body: the earth chakra governs our feet all the way up to the pelvic floor, while the space chakra relates to our throat and neck. Have you ever wondered why different parts of your body tend to be pre-disposed to ailments or imbalances? This is related to the chakra that governs that area of the body. Each one plays an integral role in our physical existence.
Additionally, each chakra governs our emotional state. Sometimes we feel stuck and uninspired, which would be a first chakra imbalance, while other times we may feel disempowered and lacking in self-esteem, which would be a third chakra imbalance. This is a very complex concept but one that is profoundly charged by these forces of nature. Once we have a better understanding of the chakras and how they influence us on a physical, emotional, and subtle energetic realm, we can begin to empower ourselves to shift our consciousness and our lives.
